Woody L. Hunt, Chairman and CEO of Hunt ELP, Ltd. and affiliated companies, and Marcus J. Hunt, President of the Hunt Family Foundation, announced today a multiyear grant commitment to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso School of Medicine.

“This is a significant commitment to our efforts to promote strategic economic development in the region,” said Woody Hunt. “We are pleased to make this grant commitment to the Texas Tech Medical School for what we view is a critical catalyst to El Paso’s growth.”

Hunt said of the Texas Tech grant, “The Hunt Family Foundation believes that strategic economic development is crucial to our region, and the medical school in El Paso is an extremely important, substantial step in that development.” This is the second major commitment from the Hunt Family Foundation for 2005, and follows the Foundation’s mission of supporting regional causes tied to economic development.

The grant commitment is tied to an endowment. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center President M. Roy Wilson reinforced that the Hunt Family Foundation’s investment in the school strengthens Texas Tech’s commitment to the growth and development of the region.

“The medical school is receiving much positive attention at the legislative level and in the public arena,” said Wilson. “Through the Hunt Family Foundation funds, we will be able to continue our accountability to the state and to the public by attracting the best possible talent.”

“This particular grant from the foundation represents a broader focus than just the issue of regional economic development,” added Marcus Hunt. He said that the endowment to Texas Tech represents support not only for better, higher-paying jobs and a new healthcare infrastructure, but also for better healthcare in the border region.

“Our community has long recognized that the healthcare challenges we face along the border are unique,” Hunt said. “Until now, El Paso has not had the resources to fully train and keep physicians and healthcare professionals in our city. We think El Pasoans deserve the same high quality healthcare that is available in many other major cities. A four-year medical school will help raise the standard of care. It is our hope that it will also generate a national interest in conducting research on border health issues here in El Paso.”
The Hunt Family Foundation was established in 1987 by the Hunt family. Since inception, The Hunt Family Foundation has made grants to over 380 recipients, including charities that focus on healthcare, education, arts, local heritage, and quality-of-life initiatives. The grant to the Texas Tech Medical School brings the total gifts and commitments made by the Hunt Family Foundation to $7.5 million.
