2022 Annual Report

Supporting Efforts to Create a Globally Competitive Borderplex Region

The Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation is pleased to share our 2022 Annual Report. The report showcases the impact we are making and our commitment to the residents and institutions of the Borderplex region: a binational area that encompasses El Paso County, Texas, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, and Ciudad Juárez in México - and the place we call home. We invite you to learn more about our efforts.

Joint Letter from the Chairman & President of the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation

We celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation in 2022 with deep appreciation for the dedicated individuals and organizations who contribute to what makes life so special here in the Borderplex – a unique region that includes El Paso, Texas, southern New Mexico; and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. We continue to be inspired by the strength, tenacity, and passion of our community, and are proud to call this region our home.

In 2022, our family foundation was able to strengthen and support our region while still remaining focused on the six pillars that have guided our giving since 1987: healthcare, education, economic development, quality of life, arts and local heritage, and elevating the Borderplex region. Our giving demonstrated our continued commitment to these pillars, and to the region.

In 2022, the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation invested over $8.7 million in grants and commitments to support 119 initiatives.

We continued to prioritize healthcare and education, most notably through a gift to the University of Texas at El Paso, which is now home to the Woody L. Hunt College of Business. Our $25 million commitment to UTEP advances our goal of ensuring a high quality education for students in our region. In 2022, we also continued to support our sister city of Ciudad Juarez with a commitment to Fundacion Paso del Norte as well as contributions to organizations leading economic development efforts and quality of life initiatives and supporting our arts and local heritage.

We also continued our commitment to elevate the Borderplex in state and national conversations. We are honored to continue the Hunt Aspen Institute Fellowship, which provides local leaders the means and opportunity to attend global seminars and participate in world- renowned leadership programs.

As a family foundation, we are mindful not just of what we support, but how that support is structured. We are most resilient when we are all pulling together, and so we tailor our commitments to encourage investment and engagement from others across the region.

The last 35 years show that there is nothing we cannot accomplish when we are united in constancy, vision, and effort. Thank you for being part of this journey, and for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Woody L. Hunt and Josh W. Hunt

Grantee Spotlight by Focus Area

In 2022, the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation continued our commitment of investing in initiatives and organizations that help create a healthy and competitive Borderplex region: arts and local heritage, economic development, education, healthcare, and quality of life. We also supported organizations whose efforts in Texas or nationally, have a direct impact on the Borderplex region.

Arts and Local Heritage: Creative Kids

"Creative Kids transforms the lives of young people with a suite of programs designed to connect art with youth in the community. We are grateful for the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation’s long-standing support for children – in and around El Paso, especially those struggling with an illness, disadvantage, or disability. The generosity of the Foundation allows Creative Kids to continue helping young people express themselves, develop valuable life skills, and connect with others through art."

Andrea Gates-Ingle, Executive Director and Co-Founder, Creative Kids

Economic Development: American Business Immigration Coalition

"As a bipartisan coalition of over 1,200 diverse businesses and business associations, ABIC advocates for immigration reforms that will grow our economy and strengthen our communities. With support from the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation and the leadership of Woody Hunt, ABIC is able to advance sensible legislative fixes to our immigration system – something that is not just long overdue, but also economically critical, politically smart, and morally just."

Rebecca Shi, Executive Director, American Business Immigration Coalition (ABIC)

Education: University of Texas at El Paso, Woody L. Hunt College of Business

"The generous gift from the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation to establish the Woody L. Hunt College of Business will make the University of Texas at El Paso the national leader in teaching and research of U.S.-Mexico business and trade. This is a transformative gift that will impact this region for decades to come."

Heather Wilson, President, University of Texas at El Paso

Healthcare: Southwest Foundation For Osteopathic Education And Research

"Thank you to the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation for their dedication to improving healthcare access in the southwest, and for continuing to support Burrell College’s mission to educate the next generation of aspiring physicians. The medical education center and Hunt endowment at Burrell are more than just investments in our students; they are an investment in the health, longevity, and future of the Borderplex region. We are honored to collaborate with the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation to enhance the physician workforce along the border for years to come."

John L. Hummer, President, Burrell College

Quality of Life: Western Resource Advocates

"Thanks to the support of funders like the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation, Western Resource Advocates can tackle the toughest conservation challenges. We are grateful for the Foundation’s commitment to protecting the Rio Grande and New Mexico’s rivers and waterways. Their support enables us to create a better environment for all living things."

Theresa Bushman, Vice President of Development and Communications, Western Resource Advocates

Elevating the Borderplex Region: University of Texas at Austin

"Thanks to the generosity of the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation, we look forward to welcoming more students from the El Paso area to the University of Texas at Austin in the years to come. Students from the Borderplex region come from vibrant, unique communities full of different perspectives, which adds to the diversity that we embrace at UT Austin. We are committed to remaining a nationally recognized institution of higher education, and that starts with recruiting the brightest minds, many of which we know come from El Paso."

Jay Hartzell, President, University of Texas at Austin
